John Van Deusen Du Bois papers, 1857-1869.

The papers consist of journals, letters to his family, and military commissions. The journals cover the 1857 Gila Expedtion from Fort Bliss, including a map, an 1857-58 march to Fort Union, a march to join Capt. Marcy who was bringing supplies to the army in Utah, the 1858-60 expedition against the Navajos and Comanches, and the 1862 Missouri campaign with Halleck and FreĢmont against Price. The letters and journals describe Dubois's life in the army, military campaigns, and the country he traveled.

John Van Deusen Du Bois (1833-1879), son of Henry A. and Eveline Van Deusen Dubois, graduated from West Point in 1855 and served in the army until his retirement in 1876, when he returned home to Hudson, New York, where he died.
